Lunch with Camilla worked its magic. By the time Camilla had shared her son Joshua’s latest antics and a hilarious story of a quilt design gone terrifically wrong, Meghan was starting to feel like her old self.

By the time she locked the museum door and headed home, she had her second wind. And she was going to need it. The sun had shone all day, meaning the sap buckets would need emptying.

Midafternoon, she’d texted Jake and Trevor, the teenage brothers of her insurance agent, Rachel. They’d quickly replied, eager for some extra cash and promised to meet her in the sugar bush when school was out. The boys had helped her last spring too. Now a foot taller and with last year’s sap run behind them, they’d be more helpful than ever.

After changing, Meghan hiked to the sugar shack her great-grandfather had built, and her father had meticulously maintained. Unlike the Walkers abandoned sugar house, the Sinclair building was watertight and sturdy.

She noted that the boys had already loaded the gathering tank in the trailer and were hauling in the first load of sap already.

“You guys are the best!” she called out from the doorway. She supervised as Jake attached the hose and began emptying the tank into the evaporator.

“No problem, Meghan,” Trevor said. “This is way more fun than shoveling driveways. Beats mowing lawns in the summer too.”

She made a mental note to tell Rachel how much she appreciated the boys’ help.

“There was a deer standing beside Mary when we first got here,” Jake added. “And rabbit tracks everywhere!” Jake was the more observant of the two.

“Jake, did you notice any sign of an insect or beetle on the trees?” Meghan asked.

“Nope. Just that red gooey stuff you told us about. You know, the treatment you and Mr. Walker put on the trees a few days ago.”

“Well, that’s good news. Maybe it was all a big scare for nothing.” She could only pray that was true.

“Okay, boys! I’ll start the fire under the evaporator; you collect the rest of the sap.”

Trevor and Jake raced to the ATV, jostling to be the driver for the next run.

Pursing her lips, she eyed up the stack of firewood. Depending on the weather and the duration of the sap run, the half-cord would be touch and go.

Minutes later with a fire crackling and the small shack already beginning to heat up, she shrugged out of her jacket and peeked into the evaporator. A mist was rising, and the sweet smell of maple sap began to fill the room. After the last load was dumped in, she’d boil until it reached just the right color and thickness. Most likely taking most of the night.

Megan dragged a chair closer to the fire and propped her feet on an upturned bucket. Last week, she’d stocked the sugar shack with new bottles and sterilized her implements. For now, she had little to do but add logs to the fire.

Her phone rang from across the room. Harry? Meghan’s pulse sped up as she crossed the floorboards.
